Yes.

Online anywhere via apps, and local to
Newcastle, Durham, Norton, Wynyard, Stockton-on-Tees, Ingleby Barwick and surrounding areas.

Do we need a piano/keyboard?
Yes.  You will need a piano or a keyboard to practise on between lessons so that you progress in your playing.  I sometimes have a loan keyboard available.

Monday 10:00-20:00

How long are the lessons and how often do we have them?
30 mins once a week.  45 mins-60 mins for more advanced levels.

Is it okay to practise on a keyboard or should I be getting a piano?
It is ok to use a keyboard to begin with.  I did most of my practice on a keyboard/digital piano in the early days and upgraded to an upright piano at a later date.  A decent keyboard with touch-sensitive keys will see you through the first few grades if you are sitting exams.  Most people find themselves wanting to upgrade to a full-sized piano keyboard to match those used in exams further down the line.  If you are not sure about what to get please get in touch.

Do I have to practise?
Yes.  You will see the best progress in your playing if you can manage practise sessions on most days of the week.  We are all going to get that week from hell where nothing gets done, but If you never practise over a longer period of time you will not progress, just like not bothering to go to the gym soon after joining.  This will spoil your lessons and they will inevitably stop.

Do you have a teaching studio?
Yes, but most of my pupils find that it works better if I come to them or teach them online.  Think about it:  time, fuel and hassle aside, a parent will probably have to hang around whilst their son/daughter takes a lesson.  A half hour lesson does not give them much time to do any serious shopping or to get back home for very long before they have to come back to collect their child, especially during the busier times of the day.  I find that I have better contact with parents through house visits and pets always give a warm welcome.

Do we have to do exams?
No.  There are plenty of musicians who just want to enjoy playing their favourite pieces and not have to sit any exams.  Graded exams can be a useful structure to help students to focus on their goals.  There is a sense of satisfaction from having achieved them and higher grades also gain UCAS points for university admissions.

When and where are the exams?
Exam sessions take place at the end of each academic term at exam centres in Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and beyond.

Do you teach theory?
Yes.  I  can teach you everything you need to know from scratch.  Most people want to concentrate on their playing to start with.

Do we need to do grade 5 theory?
Yes, grade 5 theory is a prerequisite to taking the grade 6 practical.

Do you charge when we are on holiday?
No, provided that reasonable notice is given.

Is the Prep Test the same as Grade 1?
No.  This is set to be taken before a student is ready for grade one and is a good way to get started with exams.
